Workhorse Bosch

2010 Brake Recall

What You Need to Know

Workhorse mailed an “Interim Notice” on May 2009 to Workhorse owners of motor home chassis models W20, W21 and W22 alerting them about a defect in their Bosch Brake Caliper Assemblies.

The Workhorse Bosch Brake Recall notice details the authorized interim repair procedure for specific brake problems related to the defect while passing no cost to the customer.

However, the customer carries the financial responsibility for all other brake repairs related to typical wear and tear.

As with most recalls, misunderstandings about the details of the defect(s) and reaching an agreement on which party is responsible may be difficult.

This  article will explain the nature of the Workhorse Bosch Brake Recall, defective components, repair procedures and how RV owners and technicians can determine if a brake problem is related to the defect or from a different source.

A sudden seizing or locking up of the brakes may be the first sign of a serious problem.

Typically this problem appears in motorhomes that have not been driven for long periods of time and are four or five years and older. Problem Signs are:

  • A distinctive smell of burning brakes.
  • The RV seems to require more engine power than normal to overcome the natural slowing of the vehicle, which is commonly associated with "brake drag".
  • Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) light stays on.
  • Smoke coming out from under the wheel wells.
  • Spongy or soft feeling when applying the brakes.

If you have experienced any signs indicated above please immediately have your brakes inspected at an authorized Workhorse Service Center.

If the problem is related to the Workhorse Bosch Brake Recall defects noted above, an interim repair at no cost to the chassis owner will be provided by Workhorse of which will be determined with an inspection from an authorized Workhorse Repair Center.

Brake problems noted during inspection which are not related to the Workhorse Bosch Brake Recall defect become the owner's responsibility as well as the expense of the brake inspection.

Signs of Brake Defects:
Front Wheel Seals Showing Signs of Damage
Caliper Piston Dust Seals/Boots are Cracked or Discolored.
Front Spindle Caps Heat Damaged or Leaking.
ABS & Wheel Speed Sensors Showing Signs of Heat Damage, Stopped Functioning, Generating Fault Codes.
Rotors with Radial Cracks are NOT considered recall related damage unless there is other evidence of damage.

Please note: These types of cracks are commonly caused by “riding” the brakes downhill, the absence of a tow-car-brake-system and/or hard braking for extended periods of time. Severe cracking should be replaced asap, but that will be at the owner’s expense.
The color of rotors vary from vehicle to vehicle. A small degree of discoloration and brake pad material transfer along with brake pad wear is normal.
Yet, if the rotor has received significant transfer of brake pad material, this may be related to the Bosch defect. Likewise, if the brake pads show a rough and damaged surface related to significant material transfer, this could also be considered a defect related damage.
Affected owners of Workhorse Chassis' W20, W21 and W22 should simply be aware of the warning signs noted above and have their brakes inspected just as they normally would should any question arise about their functioning.
